Effectiveness of landscape-based approaches in disaster risks reduction in Sovu sector, Ngororero district, Rwanda.

Abstract
This study examines the role of landscape-based approaches in reducing disaster risks within the Sovu sector of Rwanda. It aims to identify the landscape interventions implemented by communities, evaluate their effectiveness in disaster risk reduction (DRR), and assess the relationship between these interventions and actual reductions in disaster risks. A case study design was adopted, supported by a mixed-methods approach integrating geospatial analysis, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used to analyze land cover changes, while qualitative methods captured stakeholder perceptions and institutional dynamics. Pearson correlation analysis, conducted using Microsoft Excel, was applied to examine the relationship between selected interventions and specific biophysical risk indicators. Findings reveal that a variety of landscape-based strategies including terracing, agroforestry, reforestation, and riverbank protection have been implemented, largely driven by environmental vulnerability and institutional support. These interventions were widely perceived to reduce disaster impacts, particularly soil erosion and landslides. Correlation analysis showed a strong negative relationship between terracing and soil erosion frequency (r = –0.71, p < 0.001), indicating that increased terracing coverage was associated with reduced erosion. Grass strip establishment on contour bunds exhibited a moderate negative correlation with surface runoff severity (r = –0.52, p < 0.01), while agroforestry was positively correlated with improved soil moisture levels (r = +0.49, p < 0.05), reflecting its role in enhancing water retention and soil stability. The study concludes that landscape-based strategies, when supported by local governance and community participation, are effective tools for DRR. These findings offer practical implications for Rwanda's disaster management and land use policy, emphasizing the need to integrate landscape restoration and nature-based solutions into national and local DRR planning to strengthen resilience and environmental sustainability.
